Endless loop with Windows Update

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Version: 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4
Internet Explorer: v 6.0.2800.1106
Outlook Express: v 6.00.2800.1106
Single PC with 2 users.
---------------------------------------------------------

I have a problem with Windows Update.
When the page loads I click on the Express tab
This creates an error page which reads:
Files required to use Windows Update are
no longer registered or installed on this computer
To continue...
Register or reinstall the files for me now
Continue
Downloading and installing...

Then back to the start of all this
Click Express tab...

I now get caught in a loop
Same thing happens again.

What is happening here?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks Dave
I tried that site but there were so many confusing options
[ to an amateur like me ] that I gave up after trying
a few downloads indicated on the site.....
Authorization.xml
MUAuth.cab
WindowsUpdateAgent20-ia64.exe
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x64.exe
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe
wuredist.cab
wuredist.xml

I do have most of the critical updates installed
and a good firewall and anti-virus program so I
guess I'm reasonably safe?
