To begin with my site is using shared borders and navigation

I have written a couple of custom pages and inserted them into my web. I have been able to get the theme properly apply and navigation to work

My question is can I modify the navigation to only work one way, so that there is no link to page X (confirmation page) but that page X has the standard up and home links when generated

Page X is an ASP page returning to the user results and analysis of a previous submission. I do not want the link on the preceding submission page to appear as it currently does

No. You would have manually add links to this page, unless you add it to the
navigation view.
