Navigation button not viewable in .php

Using Dynamic Web Template (DWT) I have a horizontal
navigation bar at the top and a vertical one on the left.

A (.htm) page shows the navigation items just fine, but
when I rename it to a ".php", the Home page navigation
button in the top and the same page navigation button on
the left do not appear.

If I click on where the Home page should be in the top
navigation bar, I get a "page not found" error. Looking
at the code, the URL for that page changed from what
should be a ".html" extention to the non-existant ".htm".

Any ideas why?

Are .php pages set to be edited by FP in Tools Options Configure Editors?
- provide a URL to the site/page
