2x's a day (and twice each time) I get a warning in System Tools, in the
Application Event Viewer that my fax has initialized but can not complete
function because the outgoing rule is not valid and a valid device can not be
found.
I have a Xerox fax/copier/printer installed but didn't configured the fax
(no land line attached) and on top of that, what program is initiating the
fax to start anyway ?
Running XP Pro. Any ideas ?

dazed & confused,

personally, i will never ever use
any products from xerox again.

but what i would suggest is to
unistall the xerox software if possible
and see if the problem goes away...

if not, then i have another idea.
but refrain from reinstalling xerox
temporarily...

uh.....ok Ben, although you gave me no hint as to why.....it's my faith that
you are honest and upstanding and not just having a laugh....(just foolin')
it's my bf's printer and I haven't used it at all, ever.
so no loss to me to remove it....
so..... you think it's trying to phone home ?

I'll let you know if the warnings stop

can't be sure until
we begin eliminating
the possibilities.

just be sure that you have
the disks or whatever is required
to reinstall that printer.

bad news Ben....6 times today (twice at each event) 12:30 a.m. / 1:20
a.m. / 1:55 a.m. / 9:36 a.m. / 11:01 a.m. / and then not until 11:33
p.m. tonight.

But you know, there is a common element here, I just caught it, right before
the fax tries to initialize, the Windows Security Center Service is
started....I'll have to go back and see if it's present on the other days too.

aaaah the plot thickens

more bad news though.... it's not a xerox, it's a brother... the xerox is
his other pos. Sorry I couldn't supply anymore xerox ammo for you.

:

there is a freeware called processexplorer.

it is more detailed that the regular task manager
and will give you that edge with the hunt.

the file can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

if you find the booger and its parent you can begin
the process for removing it. If not then
provide some detail to see which other
tool can help.

also, there are some types
of malwares that can't be
removed in normal mode.

xerox is not on my christmas list
and brother laser printers are not exactly
at the top of the list either.... :)

thanks...will give it a go.....
let you know what's up.....
pls keep monitoring this thread if I need a hand yes ?
