Mysterious tilde file

M

I keep getting a mysterious tilde file appearing on the
desktop. I have been told that it is a misplaced backup
file of the address book.

At the moment I keep deleting it. Is there any other
solution?

Hi Mike - Yeah, either hide it or ignore it and be thankful for the backup.

No solution. It's an OE bug, sometimes OE makes a copy of your address
book and forgets to delete it. If you keep using OE, the file will
keep coming back.

Actually it doesn't seem to be an OE bug per se. ANY program that accesses
and makes changes in the address book can produce these spurious copies that
fail to be deleted. Case in point: the fax software that comes with my HP
All-In-One. The copies are produced in various folders depending on which
program accessed and changed the address book. To see this, go to your
address book in Windows Explorer (it's a file with a ".wab" extension) and
double click on it. Add an entry, delete an entry, or make a change of any
kind. Click on "File" then "Exit". There should now be a ~ file in the same
folder.

Conclusion: The bug is in whatever module is responsible for address book
processing.

It's a feature of XP. Live with it.

The "Mysterious Tilde File" usually appears just after you close OE but only
if you made any change to Address Book during this OE session...but not
always.

It's usually found on Desktop but on occasion appears at C:\ . Rename it
~.wab and you'll see it's an exact copy of Address Book. You can either
rename it or simply delete it.

It first appeared in November '02 with 331923/Cumulative Update for OE6-SP1
which was only available via manual download and with the more recent
330994/April '03 Cumulative Patch for OE, available via Windows Update.

You can either wait for the fix or follow the uninstall directions for the
patch at the link below.
