My Whistler Is Whistling Again

Through learning from a previous question, I asked here
on this XP newsgroup, I was told I have a beta version
of Windows. I have a few questions from this:::::Boot.Ini
multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows="Microsoft Whistler
Personal"/fast detect.
1. Does this mean I have Whistler Personal on 2
partitions of my hard drive and if I do, how would I or
can I see what is on the other partition ? I'm nosey...lol
2. Could I have caused this by letting a friend take my
hard drive out, putting his version of Windows ME on,
then putting my hard drive back on my computer? (He did
this thinking, I was a beginner,so I would do better with
ME, but I didn't like it, as soon as he put it on and had
him take it off and put my XP back on)
3. Could I have caused this by doing a system recovery,
according to the HP owners manual? (as I did not have the
CD)
4. Would this version cause problems, as I am a beginner
and take responsibility for things I have done, but could
this beta version be helping me along the way ?
5. I have a brand new boxed version of Windows XP Home
Edition.Can this be installed deleting everything out,
that is on my computer now?

If you are using a beta version of XP (which was codenamed Whistler), then
you have a version that is going to expire at some point. You also won't
have a valid version, as beta versions are no longer licensed for use. What
really effects you is the expiration - one day, you are going to fire your
machine up, and just not be able to get in.

Upgrades over beta are seldom a good idea, so I would recommend just booting
with your XP Home CD in and doing a clean install - wipe out the partition
and start over. Well, after backing up your data first.

Type winver in Start Run and report what it says. The entry means to boot from 1st disk (0 is disk 1), second partition (1 is 1st partition). Which of the 0 is the disk depends on the type of hard disk.

Thanks for responding. I'm at a point now, where I just
want to know if it's a beta version or not. This computer
was bought brand new with this on it, which, as I've
learned from reading these posts, that you should never
buy a computer with the operating system already
installed.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the advice, although it isn't what I wanted to
hear ;-( . This was bought March 30,2002. My friend took
a two year warranty out on it, when he bought it for me.I
noticed I have had an issue with this computer not being
able to accept a windows update for SP1 on the web site.
Could this be another sign that this isn't a real version
of Windows.
If I did put this new boxed version over it, I would WANT
to delete everything off, but what I was told, is that I
couldn't do that because the drivers wouldn't match up or
something to that matter and I would lose all the
programs that came with this.

2600 is the release version of XP so it's not whistler. Edit c:\boot.ini and change the display name. Someone may have copied their boot.ini over (Copy your boot.ini to Win 2000 or NT4 and it will start those OS while calling it whistler - though the folder name is likely to be wrong, esp in NT4 - WinNT and Windows are the standard names for the main folder, most NT4 are winnt, some 2000 are, and a few XP also are).
