My speakers Do Not Function

My speakers have quit working and it seems to be a program problem. When I open the audio program area it shows several programs and when trouble shooting, all say they are functioning, but the VOLUME view shows "No Program Functioning and cannot adjust volume. What do I do?? HELP! Have Windows XP Home edition
 
It would help to know if this started suddenly, without cause, or did you install any new hardware, etc.
Also, do you get no sound at all, or just when you want to use your audio player. What is your program? Windows Media?
