"My Pictures" folder causes my system to stop and reload explorer.

When I try to open the "my pictures" folder on my HP Pavilion notebook,
everything within that window stops responding and I have to close it through
task manager or wait until it causes explorer.exe to stop, which then
restarts (explorer.exe) on the desktop and the "my pictures" window is gone.
It does not respond to anything, I must hover my mouse cursor in the window
to make the folders appear, but cannot access any of my pics. I had this
problem with "my computer" and "my documents" but seem to have resolved those
issues, but this one is still lingering and is a nuisance. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Have you installed any software recently (codec pack, multimedia
application...)? If you boot into Safe Mode, are you able to open your
Pictures folder?
