My PC turns off when i run my virus scanner

I am running Windows XP on Toshiba notebook computer.
When I run my anti-virus program it turns off my system
completely. I am using Norton Anti-virus 2003 with up to
date definitions. My computer always seems to shut down
when it scans C:\WINDOWS\I386 I386 is a folder containing
more files and folders within it. If anyone can tell me
what folder I386 does I would appreciate it.
I guess I just want to know how to fix my PC so it doesnt
shut down on me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My thanks in advance,

Mr Frustrated

The i386 directory tree represents the files used to install the OS. If you make changes to
the WinXP OS then the CD is not required, the files are obtained from the i386 directory.

If you install a Service Pack, the i386 directory needs to be slip-streamed with that
Service Pack. Otherwise if you change something in the OS, the old files may be installed
replacing Service Pack files in the OS.

Why NAV is shutsdown the computer is not known.

You might want to run a full Check Disk.

You should repost this in a virus related News Group.

On any computer, virus check consumes CPU and the HD is running at
maximum. Both conditions result in high heat generation. On a laptop,
particularly a P4 or P4M, a spontaneous shutdown can be a sign of poor
CPU cooling, or a device (RAM, HD) that is too hot because of poor
cooling. You can "clean" the laptop cooling channels with a can of dust
cleaner (canned "air") available at any computer store. Keeping the can
level to prevent expulsion of liquid into the computer, blow through the
fan inlet, and then into the exhaust ports. A surprising amount of dust
can be blown from the cooling channels. Do the cleaning with the
computer off for perhaps a half hour to let any residual heat
dissipate. I live in a dusty environment with both cats and dogs, and
cleaning removes a wider variety of materials from my laptop cooling
channels.

I had the same problem on my Dell after I installed a non-Dell
memory-module. Did you add memory recently too?

You did not have a memory problem because you didn't buy the memory from
Dell (who sells the same memory you can get from Crucial only you will
pay Dell a lot more). You had a memory problem because you bought
memory that wasn't compatible with the motherboard and/or the memory
you already had.
