Alan, if you have automatic updates enabled then it could be updates
finishing their installation. If it is a situation that happens
everytime you try and shutdown then it could be set to Standby. Go to
Control Panel>Power Options>Advanced. Where it says
When I press the power button on my computer look for shutdown
selected.

Hi,
I checked it was already set to 'Shutdown' for the option
'When I press the power button on my computer'.

Any idea?

I am also having a Shutdown problem with Win/XP Home Edition. My Dell Vostro
laptop shuts down but does not completely power off. The mouse and power
light are still on.
This happened once before and appears to have started after a Windows Update
was applied and, after a later update no longer was a problem. With the
latest update it is again not powering off. The only way to power off is to
press the power button and hold it for several seconds to complete the power
off cycle. There are two problems resulting from this.
1. When I turn off power to the system the battery will run down.
2. When I try to "Restart" it will not boot up again. I have to power off
and then manually restart the system.
I have neither installed any software nor added any new hardware when this
problem started occurring.
Does anyone have any ideas?

It looks like this is a popular problem when I searched from Google but have
no definite answer.

If you want something to play with, you can try UPHCLEAN. First, time how
long a shutdown takes now. Then time it again, after UPHCLEAN is installed.
I used this on an older computer, and got an improvement.

Also, read the overview section. It recommends checking the Event Viewer
for errors, in case there is some log of why the shutdown was slow.

Mostly because it is caused by some software/malware not stopping. You
may want to scan the PC.

Check the size of your User Profile.

Is it larger than when you first began to use the computer?

Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Advanced (tab).
Under User Profiles, click Settings.

Mine used to be less than 1 MB, now it is 7.8 MB.
