the whole drive or just the win xp parts?

i have a folder on my c drive called websites? - will
this still be there once xp is re-installed or will it be
wiped?

i cannot get into windows or boot from my cd and my
system just keeps restarting itself :as you can see from

here is a copy of my original post as to why i can't boot
from my cd

alex

my machine has been fine and all of a sudden when i turn
it on it gives me a screen saying that it didn't start
successfully and and i can choose from several options

1 safe mode
2 safe mode with networking
3 safe mode with command prompt
4 last known successful satrt settings
5 normal start up

i've tried them all and the maching just resarts after i
see the xp logo for a few seconds

i've read other posts and tried their suggestions

i can't boot from the cd to repair
i've reset my bios to default again
i've tried F8 to start in safe mode - still doesn't work

If it's a real XP CD, it will just overwrite the XP parts (though I'd
personally suggest installing in a new directory, to keep from carrying over
whatever th eproblem is.) you WILL need to reinstall your other software -
you can do so in the same directory, they just need their registry entries
(etc) in the new install.

If it's an OEM "recovery" or "repair" CD, the answer is "maybe." I've seen
some that will just reinstall Windows, I've seen some that just wipe the
drive and put everything back to factory specs.

i booted from my setup disks and selected to install
windows again but it requires that i reformat the drive
to install it - i don't want to do that as i will loose
all my data?

anu other ideas - please this is urgent - has stumped me
all day and i can't boot the hd from the os or the cd

Actually, Alex, we've asked you before, just what exactly does "I can't
boot from the cd" mean? Does that mean that although you've gone into
the BIOS and set the machine to boot from the cd drive, when you put
the Windows cd in and boot, you don't get the prompt "hit any key to
boot from cd-rom"? What actually happens? Post back, or take your
machine to a good local computer repair shop. Ask them to rescue your
data - they will slave the hard drive in another machine and copy the
data and burn it onto a cd-r.

You probably have the Blaster worm or something similar.
Get the STINGER virus removal tool from www.NAI.com

If you just reinstall, you files and folders will be safe
(generally) but you won't remove a virus.

If you can't use your CD, how do you plan to re-install?
