I recently burnt a CD of Windows 2000 and planned to install it as a dual
boot with XP Home Edition (compatability issues, needed 2000) but it couldn't
copy a few critical system files and it wouldn't install. So when I rebooted
my computer it wouldn't boot so that I could re-add XP to the bootloader like
i planned to so I could do the dual-boot. So I got my XP reinstall disk that
came with my computer, booted to that and planned on installing that again on
a second partition over the corrupted install of Windows 2000 to restore the
bootloader. When it started looking for previous versions of windows, it
found my broken XP installation and said it could repair it. I let it do it's
repar install, but that couldn't copy a few files either. It still worked
though when I booted to it but it was really slow, and it started freezing
when I booted into it normally. So I booted into safe mode and did a system
restore to the day before when all was working fine (before the repair
install). When I rebooted after the restore, it gives me the blue screen of
death for a split second on normal boot then restarts. I went back into safe
mode and my taskbar was just a gray bar on the bottom of my screen. The
windows key combinations like win+r to open the run menu worked, but I
couldn't access the start menu. When I minimized something, it just turned
into just its menu bar and was on the bottom of the screen. I tried to open
system restore again by typing the command
%"SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" from the run menu but it says that
'System Restore cannnot protect your computer, please restart' or something
like that. Is this some compatability issue that I can fix by installing sp3
(I previously had sp3, and the disk was sp2?) Please help I really do not
want to lose all my files.
