My PC crashes after it sits idle for a couple minutes-HELP!!

I have an HP Pavilion 552w. The other day I tried to
install service pack 1 for windows XP. Well, that didn't
work so i had to do a non-destructive recovery. It was
still messed up so I contacted HP and they told me to do
a destructive recovery. Now my warranty is up and noone
will help with my problems. The computer works now but
then when I leave it idle for a few minutes it crashes
and I get a blue screen saying STOP: error. Or it goes
to a black screen asking me how I want to boot windows. I
really need help cause I start my online college courses
tommorow and can't have this happen while i'm doing that.
Please Help

I have found the best way to cure this problem is to format the hard drive and reinstall windows. If done right it should be like new.....
