My Network Places

Here is an interesting problem. I'm running XP Pro and for whatever reason,
I cannot see my own machine in My Network Places. The computer browser
service is running, but I have the Windows firewall disabled (no need for
it). For some reason I feel that a service is shut off, but I am not sure
which one it is. Then again, I could be wrong. My PC is in my own home
workgroup. It is on a wireless network. The workgroup and the SSID for all
PCs are the same. Other PCs cannot connect to this machine. I am dual
booting Vista Business on the machine that I cannot see in My Network
Places. I don't know if this would cause a problem.

Also, when I log into XP, I get a message that my personal settings are
loading. Is this normal? The PC never did this before.

If anyone can help, let me know.

Well, there's no harm in keeping it enabled even if you're behind a firewall
appliance - you can always set exceptions as needed.

Is the computer browser service started on all computers?

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled in your network config?

How are they trying? \\computername ? Or trying to browse? You don't need to
be able to browse just to connect, note.

From another PC, can you ping your computer by name?

Shouldn't, no.

Yes, that's normal, unless it's taking a long long time.

ok, this is what i see. my tower is configured with a static IP and I point
DNS to the router. For whatever reason, when I do a ipconfig /all it shows,
for my wireless device, that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled when in fact I
have it enabled. I'm confused...
