my dvd dosent work

the drive plays audio cd and cd rom but as soon as i insert the dvd the
icon seems to be stuck and nothing happens ie: iam not even able to open the
icon in my computer

You can try a drive cleaner, but probably the dvd part of the drive (it
uses separate lasers for cd and dvd reading) has died. Replace the
drive.

Software must be installed in order to play a DVD. For example WINDVD,
PowerDVD or some such software.

Good catch, Frank. I assumed he had DVD software but re-reading his post
shows me no reason that I should have assumed that. Thanks.
