When I click the 'My Computer' icon, only shared
documents, not 'My Documents', is shown along with my
drives. I can still go through explorer and find My
Documents, but it's not showing up in My Computer.
I've tried copying the folder and just about everything
that I could possibly think of to return the icon to My
Computer but without any luck. Is there something simple
that would bring it back? The program I am using opens,
by default, to everything in My Computer and it just kinda
sucks to have to go through c:\Documents and
Settings\Jeff\My Documents every time I need a file
instead of just clicking straigt to My Documents. Any
Advice?

usually the "my documents" folder is inside
the "documents and settings" folder on your "local hard
drive" or "local disc" inside "my computer." once you
find it, make a shortcut to it on your desktop.

Try right-clicking on the Desktop shortcut for My Documents and selecting properties. Then use the
'move' button to move the folder to another (any) location. You don't even need to move the
contents. Then repeat and move it back to it's original location. This will refresh the registry
entry that points to your My Documents folder.

Hi Keith,

Most interesting and tried, no go. I have been troubleshooting this and why
Shared Documents disappears as well after a subsequent move.

IF during the relocation the original hasn't been deleted, it can be
recovered, in "some" cases. Again, most interesting. :o)

BTW, am still waiting to hear/work with you with your last idea via e-mail.

Hi Kelly,

I tested right before I posted and it worked for me?!?!? I deleted the entry for my user profile
under:
'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths'

and, as expected, 'Keith Miller's Documents' no longer appeared under "My Computer".

Using the 'move' button found under the 'target' tab in the properties dialog for the 'My Documents'
desktop shortcut, I pointed it to a new location. 'Keith Miller's Documents' reappeared under My
Computer pointing to the new location. Moving again to my original profile location changed all
accordingly. The above-mentioned registry entry was recreated/changed with each move.

Is this not recreatable on other computers? Could it be tied to user permissions and whether or not
they can write to HKLM?

Keith

P.S. Will e-mail you soon..

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the reply.
Could it be tied to user permissions and whether or not
they can write to HKLM?

That doesn't apply here for me. My focus though has been more put on why
Shared Documents won't come back and why for many My or Shared turns into
simply Documents. I have a clean install on another system here and will
see if I can break that one too. <s>

Hi Kelly,

I'm confused. Are you saying that moving my documents doesn't update the value under:
'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths'
for you? Or are you saying it doesn't solve additional issues you've been working on?

The OP in this particular thread (who I'm guessing is long gone :) still had shared documents
showing, just not my his document folder. That's why I thought DocFolderPaths was the likely
culprit.

Hi Keith,

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you. Am beyond that, but still working on it.
:o)
