Lost My Documents icon in "files stored on this computer"

SimonBDA

I have Win/XP SP2, and I have recently lost the icon pointing to "My
Documents" within "Files stored on this computer", which is within "My
computer".
I do have icons pointing to other users files (where I have set them to
shared), and to the main "shared documents" folder. The data itself is
readily accessible via Windows Explorer or following the userid tree down
through documents and settings, but not directly through My Computer :-(

I don't know how I lost it, but how do I get it back please?
Thanks..

See if the "DocFolderPaths" data is correctly set.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths]

Add the following registry value, and then quit Registry Editor:
Value name: {username}
Data type: REG_SZ
Value data: {homepath\My Documents}

Replace the {username} and user profile environment variables with the literal values for each user who logs on to the computer.

Hi Ramesh,

I changed the settings in Registry. Still I am facing the same issue. One
more interesting thing is that it happens only in Limited user accounts. If I
change the account type to Administrator I see My Documents.

Perhaps a short cut to "My Documents" exists in the "desktop" folder for the
"administrator" folder tree, but such a shortcut does not exist in "desktop"
folder for other accounts.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and verify this key and values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\My
Computer\NameSpace\DelegateFolders

Sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If this subkey is not
present, you will not have the group: Other files stored on this computer.

Other than that, if you are using TweakUI check your settings under - My
Computer/Files stored on this computer. And/or run the edit on line 56:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Added info:

To get an account's My Documents folder to appear in Windows Explorer (Files
stored on this computer), add/edit a key in the DocFolderPaths branch like
so:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths]
"user"="C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents"

In the right pane, right click and choose New/String Value. Give it the
name of the user. Double click the name once added and type in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\My Documents
