My Documents Folder - Windows XP Pro

When I access documents through the My Documents folder - I select the
document - and there is a delay of about 5 - 7 seconds before I am
able to access the document.

If, instead, I go through Word or Excell and use the Open command, I
have no delay problem.

Any thoughs as to what might be causing this?

It sounds like your hard drive is spinning down then there
is a delay when your want something, it has to spin back
up to speed. I have the same problem with a Maxtor that I
just added. I'm going ot check on their web site for an
answer. I don't see anything in Device Manager that will
correct this.
