My dial up networking is broken (XP pro)

Hi,
I can create a dial up connection. The trouble comes
after the connection is created. The connection will have
an X on it with a message "device not available". If you
look at the properties it shows the COM 1 port connected
with no modem.
I am not able to change the connector to my internal modem
with the connect using dialog. The modem is installed
properly and is on COM 3.

What is described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;329441 is not my problem

the modem shows up correctly in the device manager and can
be queried using the diagnostics tab in the modem control
panel applet. The problem seems to be that dial up
networking is not aware that an internal modem is
installed and that only the com 1 is available. No other
devices appear in the modem section except the winmodem

I probed external diamond 56K modem but the same.
Can you help me ?
Thanks in advance

Either try reinstalling the modem by going into device
manager (right click on My Computer, Choose properties,
click on the hardware tab, click on device manager). If
taht doesn't work, try plugging the modem into the first
(topmost) PCI slot.
