my desktop icons wont work just aol.

ok i cannot get into any of my icons ie my documents my pictures my computer recycle bin etc , i can however get into aol and yahoo and games on the desktop. when i click on the ones that wont open the screen flashes for a min then goes back like id not done anything. this just started 2 days ago. i have gone to compaq support and they told me to run a system restor ....didnt work . then they said to run a scan of windows {she told me how} it promted me to enter the disk which i dont have, but she had given me a code to enter .....there was no where to enter the code. so back to square one. if anyone figures this out i have seen a few more people with the same complaint on here starting the same day. f windows cant help then who can ?/?

Try booting into SafeMode and see if that will let you open any
programs. Tap F8 while your computer starts up to bring up the
Safemode screen.

hello we have just installed norton anti virus 2005 and our desktop has
now locked up leaving us only able to run internet explorer the only
other way i can figure out is to use the "run program" we cant access
our control panel or seem to figure out exactly whats happened i called
the guy at microsoft he said to ring the norton people but there call
centres are in japan and korea.........
its got me stumped so if anyone can help plz do
