My Control Panel doesnt work

when i open Control Panel it says :

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

if you were lost in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve windows explorer. we will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

when i ask to see the error it says this :


C:\DOCUME~1\!nF^\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER446.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Which has nothing to do with anything. Suggest you look at the event viewer
and see what it says (the Event viewer can be found by going to admin tools
on the start menu (if it isn't there, you can add it using the start menu
properties) and then computer management. It's under system tools).

Post the log here (not all of it, obviously, just the relevant entry!)

The "appcompat.txt" files are essentially error reports generated when compatibility mode in Windows XP tries to run a certain program, and the text file is generated to that loacation when said program crashes unexpectedly. You may be able to decipher it. Sometimes looking in the Event Viewer is confusing, because you don't know what item may pertain to the crash. Try opening the Control Panel again to replicate the crash, and then look in the event viewer (type EVENTVWR in Start/Run/then hit OK) under Application for the most recent Red-X icon listed, and see what it reports by clicking on that line item. You may also want to do the same thing by looking under the System category while you are there.
