svchost.exe - Application Error

Windows XP attempted to install an automatic update when i shutdown
yesterday. When i came back from work 9 hours later the system had
locked up and i had to manually power off. When windows starts now, i
get the two following popup messages:

svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
[OK] [Cancel]

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvienience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were
working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve

Have you tried a system restore to the restore point created by automatic
updates prior to it's installing updates?

I'm sorry, i was so concerned with copying the error info into my
message i forgot to ask if any one knew how i could correct this issue.
I have restored to a point before the system attempted an auto update
but it has not stopped. Every time i start up the computer i get this
error & then every so often while i am using the computer until the
computer eventually freezes.

If anyone could help i would be very appreciative.

This message is rather old, but the same thing started happening to multiple
users on my network. Although the fix isn't detailed enough, it turns out
that the MS06-40 security bulletin (which also refers to KB921883 in effect
doesn't list this specific problem) ended up fixing my problem(s).

My users who used other printers nearest them that weren't really "Network"
printers per say couldn't use those printers anymore, when installing a new
printer, all that would show up was "Microsoft Windows Network" instead of it
listing the machines on the network that had printers installed. Users who
had mapped network drives couldn't access them anymore.... It was bad. Just
so happened a co-worker of mine pointed this update out to me.

None of the other posts here list this as a possible fix, so I though it
worth replying too for others to see as well. This fixed my problem. NOTE:
When I applied this fix to my servers, most machines just had to be rebooted,
so I didn't have to apply the fix to each machine.

Again, the article doesn't make any specific mention of this particular
problem (I find documentation on most MS Hotfixes to be very vague, and
unless I'm having any particular problem don't apply them all because it has
been my experience they can potentially cause other problems).

If it weren't for the tip from a co-worker, I probably would have never
found this info in here.

I just resolved my issue by turning off automatic updates, reboot, then
manually going to windows updates and installing the updates, turing on
automatic updates, reboot.

It seems that code has to do with some sort of Pentium program error
detection. I would assume that my machine failed to autoinstall an update
and this error was the result.
