Suddenly my comp. stopped recognizing audio cd's. It will play DVD's fine,
but won't read any audio cds. To my knowledge, nothing was changed on the
computer prior to this problem.

What program are you using to play you Cds or DVDs, there should be an
OPTIONs within that program and go to it and then go to FILES and make sure
that the type of files that are on the CD IS selected, usually WAV, and allow
this player to be the DEFAULT Player and under options also be sure that
there isn't a question that asks you "do you want this blank blank to be the
default CD player?" make sure YES has been selected.

I use windows media player 10- I went into the file and everything that
should be checked is checked. Whenever I put a audio cd in it tells me there
is no disk in the drive?.....

I am going to do some thinking out loud with you. Instead of wasting a day
or two waiting for answers, I am going to throw out a bunch of stuff, you
sort.
Are we talking about ALL Audio CDs or JUST ones you have made on a
prevvious computer etc?
I would start off first by opening your computer, locating the CD drive in
question, there should be a Flat ribbon cable coming from it and going to the
mother boards, carefully press on the connector on the back of the Cd Drive
and be SURE it is properly plugged in, now do the same to the plug on the
Mother baord. Next there will be a White connector with a black and red wire,
that is the power wire and be sur eit is plugeed in as well. You may have a
little wire with a small white connector going from the Cd Drive to the sound
card, that is an audio wire for Direct Sound.
If all of the above checks out, then click on Start, click on Settings,
click on Control Panel, Click on System and then select device manager. Is
the CD Drive there? does it have a Yellow Question mark on it? Do you have
more than one CD drive?
If everything is good to this point, is it possible that the arcylic lens
fell off? Is this an older cd drive? do you have another one to plug in its
place to see if it is the drive?
I would say it is either a physical connection or the drive is bad, if
everything checks out. It could be as simple as maybe a part of a CD label
came off and is covering the Arcylic lens that has to pick up data to be
recognised.
