My computer will not recognize that I have IE6 installed

I had a Trojan virus. I successfullly removed it however,
it must have change something in the IE6 or Win 32
registry. I can not access the Internet Explorer. I get
an illegal operation. So I downloaded the newest version
of Netscape along with the IE6 again, however my computer
does not recognize that I have updated to IE6 even though
the Explorer shows version 6. I tried, thru Netscape to
get to Windows update but when I get to that site, it
prompts me that I do not have the current IE6 version so I
cannot access the updates. I have tried deleting and
reinstalling several ways the IE 6 and even though it goes
through a successful installation, I still get prompted
that I only have IE5. HELP!!! Please.

Windows version?

You must use IE to access Windows Update, not Netscape, not AOL, not
Firefox.
