My computer keeps answering the phone like a fax machine

I can't find the setting to change to keep my computer from answering the
phone like a fax machine. It's really annoying. Can anyone help?

Hi,

Control Panel/Printers, right click the fax icon and select properties. On
the Devices tab, click properties. Go to the receive tab, uncheck "enable
device to recieve".

I have recently solved a very similiar problem. I have WinFax 10 and
inadvertently had a setting that enabled the fax to answer when I am
not logged on the computer.

Although I had automatic receive disabled, the "deep background" fax
receive preference kept answering.

This nasty setting took me weeks to find.....

Thank you for your response, but I'm sorry to say that I forgot to mention
that I don't even have a fax machine, so there's no fax icon in printers and
faxes. That's why I'm having such a difficult time figuring out where the
setting is.

Suggestions:

Disable everything that reads 'Wake up' in the BIOS settings.

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

There is a Fax service built into Windows XP. Enter Fax in the search
box in the Help and Support Centre and you will see what I mean!

You might want to check your machine for viruses or spyware. You never know what might have settled in to answer the phone. I've listed some freeware spyware scanners below. I use both because neither finds everything.

SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org)
Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
