I got a HP officejet J3600 and connected it with my phone cable.
Your HP J3600 came with a User Guide. On p73 of that guide, there is a
section called 'set up faxing' (parallel phone systems) which guide
provides a table of those countries which are parallel and advises what
to do about being on a telephone system which is not in that table and
therefore would be considered serial.
Some of this involves the connections on the back of the machine labeled
1-fax and 2-ext.
Then follows a series of questions and answers to help you determine how
to set up your system after ascertaining that it doesn't have anything
to do with DSL, PBX, or ISDN or distinctive ring. By the time you get
to page 75 & 76, your answers to the numerous preceding questions which
are to be answered in order, should have provided you with a scenario of
one of 10 different 'case studies' to guide you in how to setup your fax
in your system.

In a parallel-type phone system, you are able to
connect shared telephone equipment to the phone line by using the
"2-EXT" port on the back of the device.

Choose the correct fax setup for your home or office
To fax successfully, you need to know what types of equipment and
services (if any) share the same phone line with the device. This is
important because you might need to connect some of your existing office
equipment directly to the device, and you might also need to change some
fax settings before you can fax successfully.
To determine the best way to set up the device in your home or office,
first read through the questions in this section and record your
answers. Next, refer to the table in the following section and choose
the recommended setup case based on your answers.
