installed a new HP print/fax/copy/scan device but it keeps ringingwith each phone call

S

I got a HP officejet J3600 and connected it with my phone cable. When
I get a phone call the officejet device keeps ringing for 15mins or so
(as if a fax is being received). I thought it should only do when a
fax is received, not for any phone call. I guess I might not have
installed something properly. A quick search on Google or the manual
does not reveal anything

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ask yourself, how would it know before the phone rang that the call was
a fax?

If you continue to have problems with it, get back to the place you
bought it from and get them to help you. That's why they make a profit
out of the sale.

.

Since you are having a problem with a printer, and not a computer running
XP; why don't you call the maker of the printer and have them walk you
through the setup?

A fax machine can't determine from an unanswered incoming
call, that it's a fax or a voice call.

Turn the ringer off.

HP provides a fax testing function. All snippages below.

http://snipr.com/tat1f HP Officejet J3600 All-in-One Series - Testing
the Fax Setup

You can test your fax setup to check the status of the device and to
make sure it is set up properly for faxing. Perform this test after you
have completed setting up the device for faxing. The test performs the
following tasks:

Tests the fax hardware.
Verifies that the correct phone cord is connected to the device.
Checks that the phone cord is plugged into the correct port.
Checks for a dial tone.
Checks for an active phone line.
Tests the status of your phone line connection.

The HP All-in-One device prints a report with the results of the test.
If the test fails, review the report for information about how to fix
the problem and rerun the test.

Testing the fax setup
Set up the device for faxing according to your particular home or
office setup instructions.
Make sure that the print cartridges are installed, and that
full-size paper is loaded in the input tray before starting the test.
On the control panel, press Setup .
Select Tools , and then select Run Fax Test .
The device displays the status of the test on the display and
prints a report.
Review the report.

If the test passes and you are still having problems faxing,
check the fax settings listed in the report to verify that the settings
are correct.

NOTE: A blank or incorrect fax setting can cause faxing
problems.
If the test fails, review the report for more information on
how to fix any problems found.

After the fax report is reviewed, press OK . If necessary, resolve
any problems found and rerun the test.

Other than the length of time, that's exactly what it's supposed to do.

The fax machine should stop ringing once the call is answered (either by
it or by you using your regular telephone). Are you saying that your fax
machine continues to rings even after you have answered a call and are
talking?

You have two options:

1. Ask the telephone company to install a second line that will be used
only for faxes. They will be happy to take your money.

2. Buy a fax switch. These people also will be happy to take your
money, but unlike the phone company, you'll only have to pay them once,
not each month. See

Your HP J3600 came with a User Guide. On p73 of that guide, there is a
section called 'set up faxing' (parallel phone systems) which guide
provides a table of those countries which are parallel and advises what
to do about being on a telephone system which is not in that table and
therefore would be considered serial.

Some of this involves the connections on the back of the machine labeled
1-fax and 2-ext.

Then follows a series of questions and answers to help you determine how
to set up your system after ascertaining that it doesn't have anything
to do with DSL, PBX, or ISDN or distinctive ring. By the time you get
to page 75 & 76, your answers to the numerous preceding questions which
are to be answered in order, should have provided you with a scenario of
one of 10 different 'case studies' to guide you in how to setup your fax
in your system.

<snip>
In a parallel-type phone system, you are able to
connect shared telephone equipment to the phone line by using the
"2-EXT" port on the back of the device.
<table of countries with parallel-type system>

Choose the correct fax setup for your home or office

To fax successfully, you need to know what types of equipment and
services (if any) share the same phone line with the device. This is
important because you might need to connect some of your existing office
equipment directly to the device, and you might also need to change some
fax settings before you can fax successfully.

To determine the best way to set up the device in your home or office,
first read through the questions in this section and record your
answers. Next, refer to the table in the following section and choose
the recommended setup case based on your answers.

<snipped>

You should post to MS.Public.windows.Vista.Print_Fac_Scan or
MS.Public.windows.Vista.Hardware_Devices at MSnews.Microsoft.com, which
you can reach via a browser.

In the beginning, the OP posted to MS xpgen & 24hshd. Normally I when I
reply, I trim out any xposted groups which I do not read, such as
removing the MS group which was xposted in addition to 24hshd.

I neglected to do that group trimming to post only into 24hshd in this
case.

Perhaps you mean that the *OP* should as the question in some MS group
or another. I shouldn't because I don't read any of them and I'm not
the OP and I don't have a question.

How do you think it should behave when there is an incoming call?
