First, is this an upgrade installation of XP, or a frsh
installation? If upgrade, did you remember to remove all
CD burning software before the upgrade? If not, contact
the software vendor on how to do a complete un-install
after the upgrade. Then re-install an appropriate
version. For example, Easy CD reator 4 does not work on
XP. Version 5 can be made to work with the latest
updates, but it can not be on the PC during an upgrade to
XP.
If the pC came new with XP, then what CD software came
with it, if any? There is something about CD software
that does not tolerate competition. I have heard
unpleasant stories about Easy CD and Nero fighting with
the result of the loss of all CD writing capabilities.
Uninstall all witing software, then pick one, and install
only that one.
As for the software that came with the CD writer, does it
say that it is compatible with XP? If not, does the
vendor offer a patch or upgrade? If not, toss it and buy
software that was explicitly written for XP. I can say
that Easy CD 5 +atched to 5.3.4 or so is OK. Easy CD 6 is
better; that is what I use today, patched to 6.1.1.17. I
have no personal experience with Nero, but have heard that
the latest version plus patches will work on XP.
