liteon cd/dvd not recognized by windows

After installing SP3 for xp my burner stopped working. Never could get it to
start working and with multiple other problems decided to do a clean install
of everything.
Now I have re-installed everything and still the drive is not recognized.
When windows tys to install I get the error code that no drivers are
installed for this device. No firmware update from the manufacturer, and
they say the drive is supposed to use generic windows drivers. I have tried
the Upper/LowerFilters solution, and there are not any filters to delete. I
have updated ALL hardware and
ALL the drivers that can be updated from the manufactures website for my
laptop. Internal cd burner works just fine with no problems. I have tried
uninstalling the usb ports and rebooting. Nada. I have also tried multiple
other burning programs but still nothing. Any suggestions?

o/s is windows xp with sp2 and all updates to sp3 but sp3 not installed

At pc shutdown (power unplugged),move the unit to another IDE connection,
set jumper pins as needed,& reset if added to other hardware on cable, restart
pc,xp will reinstall it on restart..Also,all liteonit players have firmware
updates
from liteonit.com,get youre model number,go to thier web site & install
it.....

Does not help to move to another connection. Also, liteon does not have a
firmware update for this model. they have a firmware update for the
dx-20a4h, but when you try to install that, it tells you that you do not have
that model and will not install. After talkng to their live support, they
have informed me that there is not a firmware update and it sounds like a
system problem. Go figure. I have hooked this drive to 2 other laptops and
a desktop and it works just fine. Also cannot return the drive as pcclub is
not in business anymore, and liteon will not even do a straight across
exchange because "you need to take it back to the retailer you bought it
from." any other suggestions?

Oh yeah, how do you set the jumper pins on a laptop when the drive is hooked
up by usb?
