My background is there but icons disappear

I use xp home edition and when my desktop appears all of the icons disappear.
So does the tool bar. I had to type this on safe mode. Any advice is
appreciated.

I don't know why this happened to you, but maybe these simple steps will
help bring things back.

As far as the desktop icons:
right-click on desktop
select "arrange icons by" and then select "show desktop icons"

As far as the taskbar:
Press the "windows" key on your keyboard to bring up the start menu.
right-click on a "non icon" area of the start menu
select "properties" then select the "taskbar" tab at the top
place check marks according to the settings you want to use.
