Plea for HELP! Domain Access Problem After Win2000 Pro to WinXP Pro
Upgrade. This is the setup, Server running Win2000 Server, using Active
Directory, providing file and print services to 15 Client PC. The
clients are WinXP Pro and Win2000 Pro all was working quite well, and
then we upgraded four of the Win2000 machines to WinXP. After the
upgrade the user was able to login to the domain as usual, going into My
Network Places, showed the server and other clients. Double Clicking on
the server name would list all its shared resources, then we rebooted
the clients PC to see that all was still a go. Well no it was not, the
user could sign on to the domain as usual, however, when you click on
the server name again under My Network Places > Entire Network it would
time out and the prompt you for user name/password, reentering the
name/password again would time out. Tried using Administrator/Password
and it to would time out.

In trying to resolve this I found that if I logged out of the domain and
logged in as a workgroup and then rejoining the domain after the
required reboot of course, that the user could once again access the
shared resources. However, after a reboot and login under the domain
once again, the resources would not be available once again, until after
another process of leaving the domain and joining the workgroup and then
back to the domain once again. Of course this all can not be done by the
user, nor would they want to. I am sorry that this is so long, however,
I would be ever so grateful for any help in this matter. Of course the
solution needed is one that would NOT require me to recreate all the
users accounts over, have to retain user setting and permissions and
desktop of course.

check your event viewer for clues as to the actual problem. Make sure you
are using a switch not a hub although I doubt that is the problem.
make sure DNS is correct and that you are using TCP/IP NOT NetBeui.

Do you map network drives as part of the login?

Are mapped drives still accessible after a reboot?

I am using TCP/IP, I can get out to the internet and ping other clients
and the server. I just can not use any of the shared resources, without
going through the above ritual. The thing is all was well with Win2000
Pro, problem started after the upgrade to WinXP Pro. I will check TCP/IP
and DNS setting again on Monday. Any other ideas come up pass them this
way before I go.
