MVP's eh. Well, I think there are some people who definately dont deserve
them but get them because of their connections. I've just been looking at
the MVP list for VB and I can see at least one person who I know ( No one
here I might add) who NEVER helps on the NG's but is there as an MVP again
year after year.

No justice in this world, apparently its who you know, not what you know or
do! Sooner or later, MVP will lose its appeal when people realise they are
being treated in a non egalitarian fashion. I know people here who in my
opinion, are very deserved of this title, and work tirelessley on the
newsgroups 24*7 and yet never make it.

Microsoft, I like your software, but I dont like this club for the boys!

Terry - I've been hearing a lot of that sentiment lately. HOwever NG
participation isn't the only factor in the award. I konw some people like
Jeffrey Richter, probably as deserving of the award as someone can be, who
doesn't post much of anything in the newsgroups but who is one of the most
important people in the .NET community (even if you disagree with me about
Jeffrey or Newsgroups you can certainly see my point).

THere's no published score sheet for MVPs so you can't really know all that
goes into the decision on how they are awarded or reawarded. I don't know
of whom you speak, but IMHO, most of the people i know in the program are
very worthy. Now, are there other non mvps that are equally worthy. Sure,
but that's why nominations are on an ongoing basis. If out of all the VB
mvps there's only one that 'isn't qualified', you have to admit that's a
pretty excellent system MS has in place for the award.... I certainly know
more than 1 Developer who isn't worth a crap and in most fields you usually
find a good portion of people that aren't qualified. If only one in the MVP
VB Program isn't qualified, that's pretty good numbers - wouldn't you agree?

I don't know why the MVPs are offended so often. They only share their
knowledge in their spare time, without being paid.

Personally, I can say that I have become a much better .NET-Programmer, just
because I tracked the postings of MVPs like Herfried K.Wagner or Thomas
Scheidegger. There is so much one can learn from these MVPs.

Especially I want to thank Herfried K. Wagner. Whenever I have a problem I
do a quick Google-Search and most of the time I find Herfried who offers a
solution.

Of course there are some MVPs that never help in newsgroups. These are MVPs
that write books, articles, etc.

I cannot understand your problem with MVPs.

The vast vajority of MVP's are very cool, very talented individuals, with
this I agree. And at least in this NG, all the MVP's I have worked alongside
or with are exceptionally talented hard working individuals. Perhaps I was
just in a bad mood when I saw the list and should have waited one day before
posting.

I have seen some MVPs who are just flat out terrible. Fortunately they are
in the vast minority. Unfortunately, they get all the negative focus. Most
of the MVPs in this and other NGs are extremely helpful and knowledgeable
and I thank them and all the non-MVPs who contribute their time and
expertise to help others.

these by studying and passing exams

MCSD = Microsoft Certified Solution`s Developer = passed all required
developer MCP exams in his expertise

that have contributed to make things a little easier for folks like me.

I've looked into these, and the qualificatations, look pretty tough, but
there are a lot of materials out there to prepare the would be certified. I
don't believe its anything I will pursue, I'd rather spend my time learning
this stuff, so I use the tools to make it do what I need them to do.

The exams you mention have nothing to do with being an MVP. Most MVPs that
I know don't have these additional initials (some do, but not a majority in
the developer community).

MVPs that write books, articles, etc.

Yes, helping in MS newgroups is only one of the means of becoming MVP, but
take also into account that there are newsgroups and forums outside
Microsoft. Even MS will offer now forums (http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/)
apart from these newsgroups. For example I spend most of my time in the
Yahoo forum about .NET add-ins and not here, where I am moderator and I
maintain a section of resources (links to books, articles, samples, weblogs,
knowledge base, etc.) there to help others. Also, when you become MVP you
can write MSDN Knowledge Base articles (a flavor called Community Solutions
articles using the "kbpubmvp" keyword:

and some of us write quite a few articles each year to document bugs or
HOWTO articles. Other MVPs have web sites with resources, code samples, etc.

as i never made an asumption like that

i just explained that MVP is a MS title that is rewarded to you

as MCSD , MCAD , MCP are titles that you can earn by passing the apropriate
exams

ofcourse a MVP is not always a MCP , MCAD , MCSD although

a MCSD is also a MCAD and a MCAD is also a MCP
