I have set up windows mail without a problem on my vista account and
exported e-mails from AOL, but cannot get the same messages to appear on my
partners user account despite installing windows mail exactly the same - any
ideas? Surely you should be able to view the same e-mails on whatever user
account you are in on a PC?

Do the following on BOTH accounts :
Tools > Accounts > your account > Properties > Advanced. Put a checkmark on
" Leave a copy of messages on server " > OK

If you are accessing the AOL account via IMAP, you should see the same email
that's on the server on any PC.

Sounds like you used the deprecated POP protocol for AOL.
AOL recommends you use the IMAP protocol option:
http://postmaster.aol.com/imap/express.html

Those instructions were written for Outlook Express, but
Windows Mail uses the same settings as Outlook Express.
