2. Unfortunately, Automatic Updates, which I have since switched to to
"Notify me, but don't automatically download or install them" has downloaded
Service Pack 2 and every tike I start my laptop, it pesters me about
installing Win Service Pack 2. How do I get automatic updates to delete what
it has downloaded and to QUIT PESTERING ME!!

Thanx in advance :)

Hi,

You really should install SP2 for security purposes. Why did your friend
tell you that you should not install SP2?

Find friends that give better advice after you have downloaded SP2 and have
the needed protection in your operating system. Then it will no longer
pester you.

You need to get better advice.

Every reputable computer magazine and online resource I've read advises to
install it.

Also, new software and many of today's software updates increasingly require
Win XP SP2 to install.

Personally, I do have SP2 installed. But MS is still providing patches
for SP1 installs, and will continue to provide them until SP3 ever sees
the light of day in 2007 or maybe even 2008, so if the OP wants to
follow his friends advise, that is OK for him.

I am not surprised about your friend's advice. Since I installed SP2
(slipstreamed, not through Windows Update) I personally have had
nothing but problems; sporadic reboots which didn't happen with SP1,
inability to boot when other devices are in the system at boot time
(with HDD set to boot first) which never happened with vanilla XP or
SP1; a good proportion of open-source apps I use have stopped working
(SDL built from source refuses to work at all); many games now crawl
along where they ran beautifully on SP1...

SP2 was the straw that broke the camel's back, I'm no longer a Windows
user at all, and refuse to even consider Vista when it comes out.

That said, I do think Microsoft still provide SP1 patches, they did
last time I looked, and my SP1 boxen still get updates.

Joy and happiness. Hehe. Just happened to notice this post and note my

Tell me, which ones?

A sample:

Adobe Photoshop Elements 4

Adobe Premiere Elements 2

Some utilities such as Windows Synctoy

Apple Mac Boot Camp to run Win XP and OSX on the same Intel-based Mac box:

Some Canon camera drivers e.g. Powershot SD430

Don't be surprised if the next generation of full version software due next
year from Adobe (formerly Macromedia) and Microsoft requires SP2 as a
minimum.

First of all, there would be very, very few reasons *not* to install
Service Pack 2. Were I you, I'd get a second opinion; your friend
sounds like nothing approaching an expert to me, unless he was able to
give you sound technical reasons that you simply didn't bother to relay.

Unfortunately, Automatic Updates, which I have since switched to to

I don't have a problem with that.
But, we don't know why his friend offered this advice.

Who really cares? SP1 is still secure as long as the patches are up to
date.

ROFL!

Next time I'll have to start the story, "You are a lemming, a lemming

And that pic has my knee hurting just thinking about the landing!
