Music/Movie Copying & Monitor Problems

I want to copy music and videos on to a disk. I purchased a Sony cd-r (700MB) disk for recording music and a Verbatim DVD+R (4.7GB) disk for recording movies. My computer will not read either disk. Did I purchase the wrong disks for my Pentium 4 computer? Can you recommend what type of disk to purchase for music and video copying? Also, my computer monitor screen flickers, like a lightbulb just before it blows. Can you tell me what may cause this problem and how to fix it?
