If the drive will play DVDs the chances are that the fault is not with the
drive but with the associated software - unless it is able to detect a DVD
but not a CD. If different software is used to play CDs and DVDs this could
be proved by uninstalling software used to play CDs (this a could be MS
Windows Player, Quick Time or Real Player). If the DVD works all well and
good. If, when you put in a CD it asks what you want to play it with it's
because it's lost the software (because it's not now there) and you could
select a different software and, hopefully all will be well.

Just a thought but not 100% sure!

I am using Windows Media Player 11 to play the DVDs, I don't even get as far
as that with the CD. As soon as I insert a Music CD it reboots without any
warning.

But thanks for the input

You say DVDs will play OK and it will accept software CDs but not music CDs.
That's really weird. OK so back to first principle of computer
diagnostics - replace one component at a time until you get a result. If
you could temporarily replace the DVD drive that will check if the fault is
with the DVD drive or elsewhere. Hope your hair situation doesn't worsen!!

Wonder if this is an issue of MediaPlayer 11, music CD's and DRM?
Perhaps the OP should revert to MediaPlayer 9.

Have tried replacing with another CD drive and problem persists - even tried
uninstalling the drivers, the WM Player and going back to WM9 with no
success. As you say it is realy wierd. Have spoken to the techie guys at
work and they are just as baffled.

Expensive I know but I am giving serious thougths to junking the whole set
up and buying new!!

No, that just silly... Like cutting your head off cause you got a
headache. Why not try a different player, such as www.winamp.com ... I
would almost definitely say it's software related. And @ worse case, you
may need to reinstall windows.
