Multitasking while defragmenting the hard drive

Is there a problem with working on the computer while defragmenting the hard
drive? Will this interfere with the defrag process and create errors? My son
tried to check audio pronouncing in Encarta Dictionary while the defrag was
running. There was a long pause, but it still worked, and defrag continued.

thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin,

It won't cause any harm, but it will cause the defrag routine to take longer
and normal processes will be slower.

Just let it finish.

It is self-defeating to do work with your computer while attempting to
defrag. As you do work you change things so the defrag has to begin all
over again. I wait until I have no further current use for my computer,
reboot to the Safe mode and run defrag from there. Safe mode prevents
background programs from writing to the disk which would cause Defrag to
start all over again.
