Defragmenting problem

Hello,

I've recently been having a problem defragmenting my hard drive, and
was wondering if anyone could help me?

My computer is a 3 year old PC running Windows XP (home version) with
SP2. I've regularly run scandisk and defragmented the drive since I
bought it and never had a problem up until a couple of weeks ago.
While defragging the drive, I received an alert that told me some
files could not be defragmented. But in the report, it doesn't say
which file it is.

So I did some research online and was surprised to see that this
problem was quite common. Everyone seemed to have a different
solution, so I started trying some of them.

Some suggested defragging the drive while in safe mode. I tried it..
and it didn't help (it took a LONG time too).

Other's suggested deleting all the old restore points and then running
the defragmenter. That didn't work.

Then I read that the pagefile might be fragmented. So I went into
settings and turned off the pagefile function.. rebooted and
defragged. That didn't work either.

There were other suggestions I didn't try like buying a defragmenting
program.. or simply reformatting the drive (definitely a LAST resort).

One thing that I noticed while researching was that the general
consensus was that it was nothing to worry about. Nonetheless.. I'd
like to be able to defrag my drive without getting that alert like I
was able to a couple weeks ago.

Anyhow.. I have just a couple of questions. First.. IS this problem
something I need to worry about? And secondly, is there a way I can
find out which file(s) can't be defragmented?

This is a copy of a report right after I defragmented my drive.

Did you disable your anti virus auto scan before attempting the defrag?

Hello and thank you for the reply!

I'm using Avast AV. And no, I didn't disable it before defragmenting.
However, I never disabled it before having this problem.. and I never
got an alert like this.

I also use Avast and disable it (right click on the Avast icon in the
sys tray and choose "stop On-access protection") before defragging. Try
it. Once you're done defragging, re-enable Avast.

Well I gave it a try, and unfortunately that didn't work. I had a
feeling that wasn't the problem because in the past I had my AV
program running and never had that alert while defragging. But I
figured it was worth a shot.

I just don't get it, I always check my drive for errors.. and do anti-
virus and anti-spyware scans regularly. This all started when I
installed Windows Live Messenger on my computer.. but I don't see why
that would cause a problem.

I don't know what the problem is or what file it's flagging but the report
looks good, only one fragmented file. So my opinion is don't worry about
it.

Hi Rock

only one fragmented file

how come its not listed in 'Files that cannot be defragmented'- maybe
it got tired? :)

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

I think for the time being, that's what I'm going to do.. just not
worry about it. It would be nice to find a solution and fix it.. but
it doesn't seem to be causing any problems. So I guess I'll just let
it go.

That's what I don't understand. Why doesn't it list the file that
can't be defragmented?

its possible it is a system level file that you have no access to attempt a fix.

I always clean IE , and manually clean the TEMP folders , as well as run Disk Cleanup.
also using Event Viewer clear the folders.
