I have been using exel for about for 6 weeks and now when
I open the program up, either as soon as it is open or
after anout 30-40 seconds multiple pages begin to open
up. Upto six or seven new 'books' open. this stops me
from using the program totaly, as if i close the new
books, new ones open up.
Could anyone please help me with this problem. Thanks for
any help you can give me

Hi Nathan,

This error is most likely being caused by a malfunctioning Excel program
that is being loaded when Excel starts up. There are two places where a
program workbook could potentially be running from. Here's how to find them
and get rid of them:

1) Select Tools/Add-ins from the Excel menu.

2) In the Add-Ins dialog, uncheck every add-in that has a checkmark beside
it, make note of the names of the add-ins you uncheck, then click OK.

3) Close Excel, then using Windows Explorer, navigate to your XLStart
directory. If you installed Office to its default location, this will be:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart

If you're running Windows 2000 or XP, there's an additional start directory
you need to check located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Where <username> is the username you're logged in as.

4) If there are any files in the XLStart directory, move them another
location temporarily (don't rename them and leave them there, it won't
work).

Once you've done all this, restart Excel and the problem should be gone.
To determine exactly which program file was causing the problem, add them
back one at a time, restarting Excel each time until you get the error
again. When that occurs, whichever one you added last is the culprit.

You should also look in Tools, Options, General tab, and make sure there is
no entry in the Alternate startup file location.

Hi Rob,
thanks for your help earlier with my problem. However,
your solution did not work because my XLStart folder is
empty. Are there any other place where a program workbook
could be running from. Would you advise me to reinstall
office. I am running XP and office XP.
Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

Hi Nathan,

Rafael's suggestion about checking the alternate startup files location
(called different things depending on which version of Office you have)
under the Tools/Options/General menu is a good one. Also, have you made sure
there are no add-ins selected under the Tools/Add-ins menu?

If neither of these suggestions work, try the following Knowledge Base
article, which takes you through detailed steps for debugging Excel startup
problems:
