Multiple internet accounts in Outlook

A

Alain Dekker

Hi,

I have been using 3 separate internet POP3 email accounts in Outlook Express
for some time and am now interested in moving to Outlook proper (mainly
because of the Calendar).

However, I tried setting up the 3 accounts and when I then send mail, I
can;t see which account I am sending from. I send a few emails and the first
one in my list is always used. In OE I can choose which account is sending.

How I can I see which account is doing the sending in Outlook?

Thanks,
Alain Dekker

See if the following KB article applies to you;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222207/

The From field in OE is the one that doesn't work correctly. Basically it is
being "abused" as an account selector. When Outlook is being used in a
corporate environment you can use the From field to send messages As or On
Behalf Of someone else.

The speed of send/receive could be slower because you are using a
virusscanner that integrates with Outlook but not with OE. Also note that
OE6 is quite newer than Outlook 2000. The send/receive speed is has improved
compared to Outlook 2003.

Thanks Robert,

Unfortunately I cannot see how to select the account to choose from. When I
click "New" get the normal view without any way of choosing the account that
is doing the sending.

If I add a "From..." field all that does is change the appearance of the
message when received in the other account. The message is actually sent
from the same account every time. I want the message to be actually sent by
the account I specify, not to change the appearance of who sent the message
but then replies go to the same account each time.

Please note that I am usign Outlook from Office 2000, not 2003. Why can't I
specify the account in Outlook like I can in Express? In Express its simple:
There's a drop-down just above "To:" field there is a "From:" field with a
drop-down with my 3 accounts set up. The email is *actually* sent from the
accoutn I choose. In Outlook, the "From:" field operates completely
differently (and incorrectly!). Also, I notice that mail sending and
retrieval is much faster in Express than Outlook.

Thanks again,
Alain Dekker

Hi, I had the same problem when I switched to Outlook. It might be that your
toolbar isn't set up the same way, but when I open a new message window, next
to the "send" button, there's an "accounts" button. It's a drop-down menu and
when you select it, it shows the accounts you have available. The only
problem with this setup is that it uses the mail server address as the name
for the account. I have two e-mail addresses from the same server at
bellsouth. So when I look at the list, it shows "mail.bellsouth.net and
"mail.bellsouth.net(1)." I'm sure it can be even more confusing if you have
more than 2 e-mail accts from the same server. There are a few things in
Outlook Express that I think were easier to use, but I guess you have to
sacrifice to get more features with Outlook.

Outlook 2000 worked a bit different from that.

Note that you can rename the accounts (in any version of Outlook).
For that access the "More Settings..." of your account settings. On the
General tab you can name the account like; home, work, etc...

In no way was Corporate Workgroup mode ever a "good product" for Internet
Mail. It was never intended to be. It was intended to be the client for
Exchange Server.
You can easily switch to Internet Mail Only mode to achieve what you want.
Compare the two modes before you do:
For information on choosing a mail support mode or changing to the other
mail support mode, look here:

Hi Robert,

Thanks for that response. No, that didn't help. That article appears to
only apply to a minimal install of Outlook. I've attached my Help About
box - in any case I did a full install.

I tried looking for this "Send Using" button or menu option but I couldn't
find it anywhere. I even right-clicked on the toolbar, chose Customise and
tried to find it by going through every menu, without success. Is there
perhaps a custom macro that I can run to do what I want?

I'm amazed that so good a product as Outlook 2000 cannot allow me to
choose which account to send from! OE6 (you do point out its more
up-to-date that Outlook 2000) does it perfectly....and I didn't pay a
penny for it.

Is there any patch available for this or am I still overlooking something?

Thanks again,
Alain

As someone who has now spent upwards of eight hours trying to switch from OE
to Outlook 2003 using seven POP3 accounts from the same mail server, and most
of that time being spent reading these lists about multiple accounts, I do
hope MS is taking notice of the problems users face when encountering the
fact that these two email programs appear to act quite differently from a
user's perspective. We have been accustomed to using OE's Switch Identity
feature and now have all of ouremail dumped into one file which defeats the
reason most (?) of us have multiple accounts. I will try using Message Rules
to redirect account mail to new sub-folders, but perhaps MS should consider
imparting that information and a Wizard to help us get there. And, after
creating profiles in Outlook for all of my OE accounts, I still do not get a
choice of them when opening Outlook. Please let me know if there is a path to
that. Thank you for your amazing work. Still trying, perhaps not for much
longer!

As well they might, since their target audience is different. Moreover,
they were written by separate programming groups.
And, after creating profiles in Outlook for all of my OE
accounts, I still do not get a choice of them when opening Outlook.

In Control Panel's Mail applet, click Show Profiles. Select the radio
button that says "Prompt fopr a profile to be used". Click OK.

Thank you all for your responses. I will check out the Control Panel prompt,
but for now have decided it is easier to just keep all but one account in OE
and move one into OL, my busiess identity. Though I am prompted to choose
the dominant email account (OL vs OE) whenever I leave one or the other, it
is easier than trying to move all of my files from six accounts in an
organized manner and that will not cause inevitible program conflicts in such
a complex exchange. I suppose I can accept that OE and OL were written for
different audiences, but I sense the more at-home users are/will be chosing
to use OL and those users will have multiple accounts. That will create a
different profile of demamds for the OL service. Multiple accounts should be
easy to access and should not be dumped on one inbox page that has countless
folder files on the left of the screen (it would be dozens in my case).

You are all a wonderful group of people. May OL become as wonderfully handy
for home users as is OE. Thank YOU!
