Multiple instances of Outlook opening

The subject says it all.
Every time I get another email, or open a different folder, there is
another instance of Outlook showing on the status bar.
Several times a day I have to start closing all these "Outlooks" or my
computer will slow down.

I can't find anything in the "Options" section to deal with it.
I'm using Vers. 2002 with XP Pro

I've just started seeing the same behavior with Outlook 2007 (12.0.6023.5000)
running on XP Pro SP2 (I get three instances/applications of Outlook being
controlled by one process).

I ran the Help -- Office Diagnostics which found (and supposedly corrected)
one problem but the problem returned the next day (today). I ran the
Diagnostics again and it didn't find any problems.

The only thing I can think of is that Outlook is firing an Instance for my
Email and then one Instance for each of the two RSS feeds I've subscribed to.

I plan to unsubscribe from the feeds to see if that has any bearing on the
problem.

I am only using Outlook 2002 by itself, no RSS feeds, Win XP Pro, SP2.
Still haven't found any cure for this problem.
It's annoying.
Help!
