Multimedia Audio controller gone

Today I booted up and the booting process usually shows a listing of what was
found-like the hard drive, sound cards, memory -etc and then xp loads.
Today, The listing stopped and the words like CMOS date/time wrong..press F2
to restore defaults. No other key worked so I had to press F2. It continued
to boot but now a "new hardware" wizard started looking for Multimedia
controllers-it searched and could not find. I did have a date and time now
of january 2001 so I corrected that and rebooted. After re-booting, I now
got a new screen that I think superimposes over that listing that shows, I
think my motherboard. It says, PaP800 Motherboard ASUS and then after awhile
windows XP boots. I have sound, Media player 11 workd fine, messenger camera
ok too but in my device manager in hardware the horrible yellow question mark
is by this Multimedia Audi Controller AND when I boot up now I no longer see
the listing of found items (where that message was about CMOS) no longer
shows. Other posting say I need to update my sound board but I am unclear
on doing this. How do you find what type of sound board you have. I had my
PC made for me a few years ago and of course the company is now out of
business. In the messenger wizard the sound is listed as Creative sound
blaster CPI-- . I do not know what to touch in CMOS to get that listing to
show again in case I get another message I will never see it with this new
screen showing the motherboard superimposed. Can anyone help me?

Hello,

This is because you are using an add-on sound card. When the BIOS reset, it
enabled back the built-in sound card. You will need to enter the BIOS (hit
DEL on bootup, before XP logo appears) and disable the built-in sound
device.

You can alternatively download the audio driver software for your P4P800
motherboard here
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4P800

If the "CMOS date/time wrong" error keeps coming, you will need to replace
the battery on the motherboard. This involves opening up the case and doing
some hardware work. Bring the PC to a qualified computer repair shop if you
are not confident of doing this.

Thank you..I can get into the BIOS but do not know where to disable the buit
in sound board. I have tabs accross the topof BIOS of
Main>Advanced>Power>Boot> and Exit. Can you further direct me?
The time happened again--is it worth it to change the battery or chasing
good money after a bad PC?

Hello,

Even if you disable the built-in sound card, the problem will return once
you power off the PC.

The battery itself will cost just a few dollars so yes, it is worth it.

To disable built-in sound card, you will need to go inside each menu and
look for something like "Onboard AC'97 Audio" and set it to Disabled.

Wow--I found it in the advanced tab under Onboard Devices Config and disabled
it and now my Devise Manager no longer has that catagory of Other Devices
-Multimedia Audio controller!! Thanks. You have no idea how happy I am!
I am still, however, getting that superimposed screen on boot up of the
motherboard (where I hit delete to get into the bios). How do I get rid of
that screen and go back to just the listing of what is booting up?

thank you, I am trying to make arrangements to get the battery of the
Motherboard replaced but I am no longer getting the error of the date/time
wrong, just the screen that shows the name and logo of the motherboard-that
is the new boot up screen I am mentioning.
