multi-level list

Sorry, I know this information must be somewhere, but i cannot find it.

I have never used multi-level lists before, and i find them confusing.

I have 4 heading styles (Heading 1, 2, 3 and 4) that I have modified and
applied to the appropriate headings. I would like to create a multi-level
list like the following:

heading 1 - no number
heading 2 - no number
heading 3 - 1.1
heading 4 - 1.1.1

I also have a total of 6 chapters. For each chapter I would like to be able
to set the first digit in the multi-level list as the chapter number. So for
chapter 2 I would like

heading 1 - no number
heading 2 - no number
heading 3 - 2.1
heading 4 - 2.1.1

and for chapter 3

heading 1 - no number
heading 2 - no number
heading 3 - 3.1
heading 4 - 3.1.1

and so on.

I just cant figure out how to do this. I did manage to get a multi-level
list working in my chapter 2 document... however, i am now trying to combine
my other 5 chapters into this document seperating it with section breaks and
pasting in my work, but i cant figure out how to increment the first digit in
my list for the different chapters.

Can someone help me achieve that numbering system, I will love you forever

Ok after 3 hours i think i can answer my own question... can someone confirm
that this method is ok... im paranoid that all the numbering is going to go
crazy at some point if i get this wrong, causing a massive stress/headache as
my deadline is looming.

I took my chapter 2 document which has a working multi-level list and displays
heading 1 - no number
heading 2 - no number
heading 3 - 2.1
heading 4 - 2.1.1

I then created a section break, unlinked the header, changed the header,
then pasted my third chapter in below.

I placed the cursor on the first heading 3 line in the new chapter. Then
clicked "multi level list" button in the paragraph section on the home tab
(Im using word 2007, i should have stated this, sorry)... then clicked define
new multi-level list. I deleted the first digit 2 and typed 3 instead under
the "enter formatting for number" section... I then changed the "apply
changes to" section to "this point foward" in the top right of the box. Then
i clicked ok.

It seemed to work. Is this the correct way to do it?

SORRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have solved it after more hours....

All i needed to do was set heading 1 as the Chapter number in the
multi-level list.

Everything is sorted now... sorry to waste anyones time if they read all
this
