mspaint

I have had windows xp for awhile and I had no problems
with mspaint but one day I noticed it and the microsoft
games were gone. I'm not really worried about the games
but I need mspaint. If someone could post a link to a
mspaint download site or tell me how to fix this I'd be
very thankful.

Hi

Type the following from Start>Run to see if Paint is still on your system:

mspaint

If the Paint program shows up, you can create a Desktop shortcut for it with
the following command:

%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe

Are you sure the program is gone, or just your shortcut to it? To find out, click Start, Run, type in mspaint and click OK.

If it is gone, you can just reinstall it from your Windows Setup. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side of the box. A new windows will load. With Accessories and Utilities highlighted, click the Details button, then with Accessories selected, click the Details button again. Put a check mark next to Paint, OK your way out. If the setup files are not on your hard drive, you will be prompted for the Setup CD. If there is already a check mark next to Paint, uncheck it, go through the process outlined above, then when finished go back through the process and check the option for Paint.

Hi Bill,

Since downloading the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool a few days ago,
MSpaint no longer works - I just get a blank MSpaint window then, after a
little while, one of those "had to close" messages!

I tried your instructions below (v clear, btw) but MSpaint still acts the
same.

Any ideas ? I wonder if it is really the MSRT killing it ? Thanks,
Gerry )

Hi,

This fix usually works:

Close any/all instances of MSPaint. Then start/run regedit, navigate to this
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

Hightlight (click on it) that key and delete it. Close the registry editor
and reopen Paint.

Am guessing that it was just coincidental.

Hi Guys, sorry to be a pain.

I tried Kelly's script (coz I'm not familiar with RegEdit) but no apparent
difference. THEN I found out this: if I run MSpaint from Start/Run, it looks
fine but if I click my Office shortcut button, it gives the blank window !
(That's only been since the MSRT downld, but possibly that's only
coincidental?)

I'm sorry this has turned into an Office button shortcut problem but I'm not
sure where else to post this.

btw, I have already tried turning off that button and back on again = no
good and I've also tried Bill's Add/Remove Windows Components to get rid of
it and bring it back (tho it didn't ask for the CD which surprised me a bit).

Summary: Start/Run & R-click OpenWith are fine BUT Office shortcut button
and SendTo give blank functionless window then "has to close" message!

Any ideas ? Thanks, Gerry )

No idea Gerry - got to be something about the Office shortcut, but I don't
even have a guess.

UPDATE to ALL (from GerryP777) :

Following a hint from a suggestion about a different problem, I found a
MSpaint shortcut that worked and compared it to the failing Office button
shortcut.
It seems that where MSpaint used to run happily in c:\I386, it nows runs
in c:\windows\system32. I suppose some update or other must have updated most
of my system BUT not checked for shortcuts (eg Office toolbar!)
That's a bit worrying coz what else has/will be changed and make stuff
stop working! Now feeling happy but a bit scared !

(Kelly : thanks for your help. What did you mean by "Too early to tell?" ?)

Hi,

That was the problem, it should have never been pointing to C:\I386 in the
first place. That is a cache of the system files, nothing should be run from
it.

Hi Rick, thanks it all seems ok now.

Only Q i have is why did the MS Office button shortcut ever point to I386 in
the first place - given it's one of the standard ones. Also, how come it
used to work but suddenly stopped working.

If you happen to know why, I'd be interested to hear - but, otherwise, don't
worry.

best wishes, Gerry )
