MSPaint

M

Marilyn and Bob

I have a new computer with XP Home (SP1a + all critical and most regular
upgrades) + SATA/AHCI drivers. I tried using MSPaint the other day and got
the following message:
Paint has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.

This follows the use of a legacy Graphics program (Corel Printhouse) which
generated a similar message. I had not tried Paint before and have no idea
how far this problem goes back.

*************

I have uninstalled/rebooted/reinstalled MSPaint. Same problem.

I have reinstalled WindowsXP on to of itself twice, once from Windows, once
from a CD boot. Still same problem.

Anyone has an idea to fix this problem? And what is this missing symbol
file?

P.S. I have also tried removing the Paint registry key (Kelly's corner 191)
with no change.

i uninstalled paint in the add/remove windows
components,,then deleted the paint registry
key,,reinstalled paint,, and it worked again.

I just ununstalled and reinstalled MSPaint again. The registry entry was
not present before or after the uninstall reinstall. Same error.

Yes, and, in addition, as I said, I do not and DID NOT have that registry
key at all. I even uninstalled MSPaint and then manually went through the
registry and deleted every reference to MSPaint (including the MRU's),
reinstalled Paint. Same error.

Then I set MSConfig to the Diagnostic Startup mode, rebooted and tried
again. No luck. Rebooted normally and ran EndItAll 2. Still no joy.

Probably totally unrelated, but I remember having a similar problem in ME.
Paint would crash when I was editing a 24 bit bitmap, but was fine for
anything else. It turned out to be the Graphics Driver. Your problem may be
totally unrelated but what harm does it do to try another driver?

Funny you said that! I'm pretty sure you are right. I was doing some more
diagnosing and when I booted into Safe Mode it worked. I got into Paint and
it rebuilt the keys in the registry. I then tried in VGA mode (which I
assume loads all/most of the drivers other than the video drivers). It
worked again. So my guess is that it has something to do with my ATI Radeon
(Catalyst) drivers. Time to go back to the Dell forum with this info and to
do a search on the ATI site (I have the latest drivers). I may also try the
original drivers that came with the computer. Thanks all.
