MSOCache ?

Win XP Pro / SP2; C: = FAT32 / D: = NTFS; (50-50)

Is it adviseable to delete directory D:\MSOCache???

As noted in an earlier post, I've a damaged drive (above) which
won't boot as Master anymore. I want to try and fix that drive;
so currently backing up all critical and data files but first
sorting thru each directory to see what can be discarded.

This is taking a lot of time and space (of which I have little)
as about 20GB to save from each partition.

I don't want to use the built-in "backup" function (except for
the critical system backup stuff). I'm zipping up everything
useable I find in each directory and storing it myself to
where I can find room - spare comp, flash stick, CDROM's, etc.

I note an "MSOCache" directory (290MB) on D: (the NTFS partition).
It's about 9 sub-directories deep, althogether. In the "All Users"
subdirectory's subdirectory, there look to be about 100 MS cab
files. Most of these have 'short' names, containing the numbers
1401 thru 1405 (ex: A2561405.CAB).

Are these maybe the original OS installation files?

If not, I could do without that extra 290 MB of backups as I have
limited space for such, currently.

I don't know who did the original install on this pc. If I mess
up on the drive repair, I'll probably have to re-install from
CD_ROM Installation disk anyway. Will this automatically create
another "MSOCache"? (Don't think so). Or could/should I create my
own from the CD, if this is advisable?

Can anyone please advise?

Hi,

MSOCache is the result of a full installation of MS Office. This is the
cache used so that if you add functions to your existing office
installation, you are not prompted to insert the CD. Should you delete the
cache, the office installation will simply prompt you for the disk should it
need to access any files formerly housed in the cache.

Thanx Rick and Wesley. That did it. I can take it from there. Looks like
I'll have to use the LIST tool to back it up with, if decide that route and if
I don't find my friend's CD's. Still debating how to handle that problem HD...

Appreciate.
