MSN Photo Upload Tool

I'm having a problem with MSN Photo Uploads as used on Spaces and Hotmail.

I *was* running a perfectly good Millennium setup, and could send photos
with no problem..... til someone decided to do some upgrading on Spaces on
Thursday 6/8/06... now I can't upload any photos. My MSN Photo Upload Tool is
corrupted. I tried to remove and reinstall, but it won't take.

Nobody at Spaces support can help if I'm running anything before XP, so I
bought the XP SP2 upgrade and installed it... I specifically did "New
Install" so that there wouldn't be anything from the old Millennium install
in the way... and then went to Spaces and tried to install MSN Photo Upload
Tool. I get the box asking me to install it, and a yellow infobar at the top
that says "Click here to install".... I did this.... and at least now it's
not corrupted.

BUT IT STILL WON'T LET ME UPLOAD PHOTOS! I go back to attach a photo to a
blog post, and I get the pop-up screen with the "My Computer" and "Online
Photos" tabs, but the window freezes. Attempts to close the window also close
the IE window that Spaces is in. On the rare chance that I do get a
navigation tree, it locks when I get to the directory that the photos are in.

I have tried moving the photos to the XP default "My Pictures" folder
underneath "My Documents", which is under "Documents and Settings" ->
"Username", with no success. (Previous ME install was simply "My Pictures"
under "My Documents" in the root of C:\.)

Is there a fix that I don't know about? I've read several articles online
that say "uninstall and reinstall" MSN Photo Upload Tool, and other articles
about IE6 bogging down on uploads (but those fixes involve editing the
registry).

I don't know anything about Spaces or Hotmail so can't help.
Reading your post, you are coming from Windows ME to XP and you are getting
freezes and locks.
To run XP, you need at least 256 MB of RAM memory (and preferably 512) to
handle large files like photos.
I really don't know if this is the problem, but your ME computer is old (old
in digital age!) so I would check how much RAM you have on it and if this is
a desktop computer you can easily add memory to it at a fairly low cost.

The system is less than a year old. I had ME on it because I have a couple of
"legacy" programs that require being able to boot into DOS to run.... which I
can't do under XP.

It has an AMD Sempron 2200+ with a 512M and a 128M, so that'd be 640M of
memory.

I seriously doubt that the system itself is the problem anyway....
everything was fine three days ago. I was trying to do some stuff on Spaces
on Thursday evening and kept getting "Spaces is temporarily unavailable,
please check back later" messages... and now I can't upload photos.... or
email them in Hotmail.

I have been having the exact same problem as you James. At first I thought it
was just because I was internet and technically retarded, but it would appear
that wasn't the issue here. My problem now is that I install ActiveX (or
whatever the hell it is) and can't go any further to even download the Photo
Upload Tool.

Someone better help us before we go friggen CRAZY!!

Flee,

I suspect the problem is not in XP so much as it's with the MSN group
(Hotmail, Spaces, etc). I installed the Vista beta last weekend and that
didn't fix the problem.

Ironically, my 5 year old son's computer came with XP SP2 from the factory,
and it works just fine. It's just a pain to move the photos to his computer,
log into my Spaces account, and upload photos.... mainly because I have to
seperate him from his computer in order to do this. (He likes to play Putt
Putt.)

I've been holding back before complaining much to the MSN group, because
Spaces is supposed to migrate to the Windows Live platform soon... in which
case a whole different upload tool might be available.

Many people complain that when they go to edit a photo album and add photos
to it, it appears that the “Add Photos†link is broken.

Actually, it may be just getting blocked by third party software. If you
have any such software on your machine (toolbars with popup blocking,
security software with popup blocking or ad blocking software) make sure that
you turn these blockers OFF temporarily to allow the MSN Spaces Photo Upload
control to be installed on your machine.

The other thing to double check is that your IE6 browser security settings
are set to Medium by following the steps below:

Using Internet Explorer 6, click "Tools".
Click "Internet Options".
Click the “Security" tab and then select the Internet zone
Click on the “Custom Level†box at the bottom of “Internet Options†window
The “Security Settings†window will now appear where you can select
“Medium†at the bottom and then click on the Reset box
Select “Yes†when asked: “Are you sure you want to change the security
settings for this zone ?â€
Click “OKâ€
Click "OK".

Andy,

I appreciate your attempt to help. However, in this case, I am actually
getting the blue screen with two tabs, one for photos on my computer and one
tab for online photos. Therefore the Upload Tool is loaded and trying to work.

The problem lays in that when I navigate to the directory with the photos I
want to upload, the Upload Tool window freezes. And then IE freezes. Under
IE7 Beta (with Vista Beta) I now get "Not Responding" in the window's title
bar after about a minute of waiting for the Upload Tool to do something...
and it tries to send an error report to Microsoft, hopefully someone will
look at it and figure it out.

Spaces Team posted on their blog late last week that they have posted a
fixed Upload Tool for IE7 Beta users, but it does the same thing for me as
the previous version did.... so there's still something wrong somewhere.
