A friend related this technical problem with MSN Messenger to me recently. I
asked for a detailed description, and this is what I got...

"there are no error codes. what happens is this. i won't be signed into
msn at all. but all of a sudden someone will send me an MSN message and it
will come up at the old MSN 4.3 version, totally not updated, the one i used
back in like 1999 or something you know? so what i have to do then is tell
them that i'm going to sign out, and use my 7.5 version, the only one that is
installed!! anyway so i try to sign into the 7.5 Version, and the little
twirly box (like my description?) comes up that says "you are signed into MSN
at another location; we are now signing you out of that one and into your new
one" (paraphrase) and so the 4.3 closes out, and 7.5 opens up and all is well
again."

I suggested completely uninstalling any versions of Messenger she may have
on her PC, and then downlaoding a fresh copy of 7.5. I thought this would
work, but the proplem still persists. I am at a loss for a solution. Any
suggestions. I am about to start waving a white flag...

Hello,

It seems that Windows messanger (not MSN Messenger) is launching itself automatically upon startup
and signing your friend in. The notification icon might be hidden and hence your friend does not
think that he is signed in. When your friend signs in using MSN Messenger 7.5, he gets signed out of
Windows Messenger and hence gets the notification.

Is your friend running WinXP?

Is she confusing the earlier Windows Messenger v4.3 with MSN Messenger?

What you are saying makes prefect sense. I should have thought of that
myself, but didn't. DDUUUHHH!!!

Further to my previous comment, Windows Messenger trying to hog in on MSN
Messengers action does indeed seem to be the culprit. I think once we keep
it from trying to sign in, the problem should be solved. Thanks again guys!

YW, Hagar. If she doesn't use Windows Messenger, best bet would be to
disable or remove it IMO.
