I have just had to re-install my XP Home SP1 and now I can't find a version
of Messenger which will work. It keeps prompting me to update but then tells
me the minimum requirement is SP2. Any suggestions? I really don't want to
install SP2.

And why not install SP2? You are running a very outdated and less secure
version of IE & OE. Not to mention that SP3 is only a few months away.

My suggestions are:
1) Install SP2 then install Windows Live Messenger (new name for MSN
Messenger)
2) Do nothing (don't install both SP2 and messenger)

If you don't want to install SP2, you will have to scour the Internet for a
source of older versions of MSN Messenger. Good luck finding a source which
won't take advantage of the insecurities in your less than SP2 version of
Windows XP.

If your machine's not fully patched, most of your contacts won't want to
chat with you!
