Is Windows messenger the same as MSN messenger?

I've just installed MSN messenger 7.5 without un-installing Windows
Messenger on my XP Home system.

Start> All Programs, lists both Windows Messenger and MSN messenger 7.5
Can I uninstall Windows Messenger and not lose contacts?

Your contact list is held by the Messenger server, so uninstalling Windows
Messenger will not lose you your list..

Rather than uninstall Windows Messenger, open up Outlook Express and uncheck
the option to automatically start Windows Messenger..

I prefer WM because it is less messy than its 'home user' cousin..
