MSN and Microsoft pages say my browser is old

Wonder if anyone is having the same problem.

Over the last couple of days, whenever I try to access
hotmail or MSN mail or other microft pages, I am getting
an error message saying that that my browser doesn't
support these pages and i should upgrade to at least IE
version 4. I am using IE6 and have installed all the
patches and upgrades that I can find!!!!! IS anyone else
having the same problem or know of a solution. I also
cannot receive calls on netmeeting (i dont suppose this
is connected in any way)

Several of these are known to cause problems:

1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking" and
"Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content -
"Allow All Scripts To Execute" Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit
encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries
that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME Other versions = (compatible; MSIE 6.0;
Windows NT 5.0

Hi PA BEAR,

I'm having the same problem with YahooMail, MSN,
Microsoft Office Update and Help features, and Hotmail
sites.

I had google's toolbar installed with pop-up blocker, but
I've disabled it and the problem persists.

I checked the registry key you had in your post. I'm
running XP Professional Edition, but my key says Win32.
Should it say Windows NT 5.0?

I don't have any of the other software you mentioned
installed.

Other suggestions?

Post the exact error message(s) /you're/ getting in a separate thread,
please.

Disable (at least temporarily) any/all third-party apps running in the
background (e.g., NAV, NIS, anything by McAfee, including firewalls:
CAREFUL!) and see if it makes any difference. (You're not running a
third-party firewall /and/ WinXP's built-in one, are you?)

Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? Check your system for
"hijackware":

Run in this order:

1. CWShredder (fix all)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all)

3. Spybot (generally, fix all in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Hi Pa and Sassy

I have also tried all the suggestions with no joy.
Everything is updated and nothing is found. This just
started happening a couple of days ago. hmmmmmmm

I get the message when i try to go to the hotmail sign-in
page. Its not a message box, the actual web page is
diplaying this message. If I open messenger and sign in,
i can go to mailbox no problem via there - its just the
sign in page that seems to be not playing!

Perhaps Mr Gates could enlighten us, lol

Hi Sassy - not sure if you are using a host file to
control popup, etc, but I am using one provided at
MPVs.org and I think this is causing the problem. I
renamed my host file to NOHOST to disable it and the
hotmail loads fine!!!
maybe you have the same propblem?

There is not an entry in that HOSTS file for hotmail, msn or passport,
Simon.

If renaming it to NOHOSTS solves your problems, something /else/ (e.g.,
hijackware) made the entry/entries!
